Mehamn City
Arctic Finnmark fishing village with regional airport
On Norway’s far north coast, Mehamn is a fishing port with a Hurtigruten stop, seabird cliffs and midnight sun in summer; visitors come for cod, rough fjord scenery and Arctic solitude.
Why Visit Mehamn?#
A remote Arctic harbor with a strong maritime character, Mehamn appeals to travelers seeking big-sky experiences and wildlife-laced coastlines. The Hurtigruten port gives a front-row seat to coastal fishing heritage, while nearby Slettnes Lighthouse and Varangerfjord bird cliffs offer memorable seabird and seal encounters. Saami reindeer-herding traditions and local seafood cuisine add cultural texture, and in winter the aurora hunts contrast with the prolonged daylight of midsummer for a true seasonal shift.

How to Get to Mehamn#
Mehamn is a small Arctic coastal town in northern Norway with a regional airport (Mehamn Airport, MEH) and a Hurtigruten coastal service. Most visitors arrive by regional flight from Tromsø or by the Hurtigruten ship; road journeys are long and infrequent.
Mehamn Airport (MEH): Mehamn has its own airport (Widerøe regional flights). Flights commonly link Mehamn with Tromsø (TOS) and other Finnmark stops; the flight time to Tromsø is about 40-50 minutes. Expect domestic fares to vary widely by season and advance purchase (typical paid fares often range roughly NOK 600-1,500 one-way).
Tromsø Airport (TOS): Tromsø is the nearest larger airport with more frequent connections (including onward connections to Oslo). The flight from Tromsø to Mehamn takes about 40-50 minutes; allow extra time for connections. From Tromsø airport you can connect onward by a regional flight (Widerøe) or drive - Tromsø to Mehamn by road is a long journey (~6-8 hours) and not practical for most visitors.
Train: There is no railway to Mehamn; the nearest mainline railheads are far to the south (e.g., Narvik or Tromsø area rail connections through Sweden/Norway routes). Rail is not a practical way to reach Mehamn.
Bus & Coastal Ship: Regional coach services (local county buses) serve coastal Finnmark, but schedules are limited - check the local county (Troms og Finnmark) timetables. Mehamn is also served by the Hurtigruten coastal ship; coastal voyages connect Mehamn with other northern ports (schedules and durations vary by itinerary - expect multi-hour legs). Local taxis connect Mehamn village, airport and port (short trips, typically a few minutes).
How to Get Around Mehamn#
Mehamn is best reached by regional flight or by the Hurtigruten coastal ship; local buses exist but schedules are limited. Once there, taxis and walking cover most short transfers - renting a car is useful only if you plan to explore beyond the town.
- Regional flights (NOK 600-1,500) - Widerøe operates the short regional flights that are the fastest practical way into Mehamn. Flights to Tromsø take about 40-50 minutes. Book in advance in high season; baggage rules are strict on small aircraft and fares vary by demand.
- Hurtigruten / Coastal ship (Varies (multi-leg fares)) - The Hurtigruten coastal service calls Mehamn on scheduled sailings along the Norwegian coast. This is a comfortable way to travel if you have time; trips to nearby ports take several hours and itineraries are multi-day for longer journeys. Check the Hurtigruten timetable for exact times and prices.
- Local bus (NOK 50-200) - Local county buses link Mehamn with nearby villages and some inland towns. Services are limited (few runs per day) and timetables change seasonally - consult Troms og Finnmark public transport information before travel. Expect rural fares to be modest but variable.
- Taxi (NOK 100-300) - Taxis are available at Mehamn airport and in town for short transfers between airport, port and village. Because the town is small, trips are short (5-10 minutes) and prices are modest compared with larger Norwegian towns. Pre-book in busy periods.
- Car rental / Driving (Varies (rental daily rates)) - Driving lets you explore the wider Nordkinn peninsula but expect long distances and winter weather hazards. Roads are scenic but can be closed or icy in winter; ensure a suitable vehicle and local road-condition checks.
- Walking - Mehamn is compact and highly walkable - most services, shops and the harbour are within easy walking distance of the centre. Dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes in winter.

Shopping in Mehamn#
Shopping in Mehamn is basic: expect a small grocery, a couple of convenience shops and the occasional tourist stall in summer. If you need speciality items or a wider selection, plan to buy them in larger towns before you arrive. Souvenirs and local fishing-related goods sometimes appear in seasonal stalls or at harbour-side kiosks, but selection is limited year-round.
Nightlife in Mehamn#
Nightlife in Mehamn is very low-key. Evenings are usually centred on a few local pubs, hotel bars or occasional community events rather than a lively bar scene. If you’re after live music or a late-night crowd you’ll likely need to travel to larger towns or time your visit for special local festivals.
