Megaliths of Carnac and of the shores of Morbihan
Historical Site Extensive Neolithic alignments of standing stones and tombs
Neolithic alignments of standing stones, dolmens and passage graves scattered along Brittany’s coast. Visitors walk between long stone rows, visit interpretation centres and study prehistoric funerary arrangements and landscape placement.
The Megaliths of Carnac and of the shores of Morbihan are a dense concentration of Neolithic standing stones, dolmens and tumuli on the southern coast of Brittany, France. The monuments date to the Neolithic period, broadly between about 4500 and 2000 BCE, and include thousands of stones across the landscape.
The site is noted for its long alignments of menhirs that run across fields and low ridges, several kilometres in total, and for clusters of dolmens and burial mounds. The most visited sectors are the large alignments and their associated visitor routes where walkers can follow the rows of stones on marked paths.
In addition to the standing stones, visitors commonly see sizable tumuli and dispersed chambered tombs that reflect different local building traditions. Interpretation panels and local museums present typologies of monuments and selected finds recovered from excavations.
The monuments were erected by Neolithic farming communities between the mid 5th and the late 3rd millennia BCE. Archaeological research has recorded multiple construction phases and associated burials, while the precise social and ritual functions of many monuments remain debated among scholars.
The remains lie on the coastal plain around the modern town of Carnac and the Gulf of Morbihan in southern Brittany. The monuments are spread across farmland and coastal marshes, with the town of Carnac providing the principal visitor access and services.
- Scale of the site: More than 3,000 standing stones are grouped in alignments and fields across the Carnac area and the nearby shores of the Gulf of Morbihan.
- Best visiting times: Several alignment sectors stretch for several kilometres, with the best light for photography in the morning and late afternoon.
