Meersburg Castle

Meersburg Castle is a medieval fortress on the northern shore of Lake Constance in the town of Meersburg, Baden-Württemberg. It is commonly cited as one of Germany’s oldest inhabited castles and today functions in part as a museum.

The site presents preserved medieval rooms, interpreted interiors and exhibitions that illustrate castle life and regional history, and visitors often tour the ramparts for views across the lake. The complex includes later-built structures that broadening the visitor experience.

The castle complex originated in the early medieval period and underwent successive additions and renovations, with a separate Baroque palace added in the 18th century. Over time the site moved from fortified residence to a partly residential and partly museum function.

The fortress sits directly above the lakeshore in Meersburg on Lake Constance, facing the city of Konstanz across the water.
