Mato Grosso Plateau

Plateau Extensive Brazilian plateau forming cerrado and savanna ecosystems

The Mato Grosso Plateau rises across Brazil’s interior, offering Cerrado woodlands, river valleys and approach routes toward the Pantanal. Eco-tourists use it as a springboard for wildlife watching, canoe trips and rugged trails.

The Mato Grosso Plateau is a broad upland region in west-central Brazil that forms part of the larger Brazilian Highlands and covers much of the state of Mato Grosso. It consists of elevated plains and escarpments that sit hundreds of metres above surrounding lowlands.

The landscape is dominated by cerrado savanna, seasonal rivers and sandstone escarpments; notable scenic areas within the plateau include the Chapada dos Guimarães with its cliffs and waterfalls. The plateau is also important for hydrology, feeding rivers that drain both north to the Amazon Basin and south toward the Pantanal.

Geologically the plateau is an old landscape shaped by uplift and erosion, and it supports agricultural zones, protected areas and patches of relatively intact cerrado. Human settlement is concentrated around towns and the state capital of Cuiabá, which lies within the plateau region.

The plateau covers much of Mato Grosso state in west-central Brazil and sits between the lowland Amazon to the north and the Pantanal wetlands to the southwest; Cuiabá is the principal city located on the plateau.

  • Landscape and hydrology: The plateau forms higher ground that separates the Amazon Basin to the north from the Pantanal wetlands to the southwest, and it supports extensive Cerrado (savanna) vegetation.
