Matka (lake)
Monastery Artificial canyon lake near Skopje with boat tours
A narrow canyon and reservoir west of Skopje with monasteries, caves and kayaking; visitors take boat trips, climb limestone walls and explore Vrelo cave.
A narrow canyon and artificial lake on the Treska River near Skopje, Matka is a compact natural-recreation area known for steep limestone walls and cave systems. The site lies within the administrative area of Skopje and is a short drive from the city.
Boat trips into water-filled caves and short kayak or rowing excursions are common attractions, with guides operating from the lakeshore. Hikers and climbers use trails along the canyon walls and there are several short walking routes that offer views of the gorge and rock faces.
The lake is formed by a dam on the Treska River; the canyon has been used for local recreation and occasional small-scale hydropower since the reservoir’s creation. The surrounding area contains historic monastic sites and traditional rural features dating back several centuries.
About 10-20 kilometres southwest of central Skopje, the canyon sits in a steep, forested limestone valley. The nearest urban centre is Skopje, with the site reached by road from the city.
- Best time to visit: Most-visited in spring and summer when boat trips and hiking trails are open and water activities are possible.
What to See #
- Vrelo (cave): A karst cave reached by small boats from the lake; one of the area's most-visited caves with a water-filled entrance and short guided boat trips.
- Matka dam and lake: The dam and reservoir that created the lake on the Treska River, forming the waterbody used for boating and small-boat access into caves.
