Matka Canyon

Matka Canyon is a steep, narrow river canyon carved by the Treska River and located near Skopje in North Macedonia; it is a well-known recreational and natural area. The canyon contains caves, medieval churches and walking tracks that attract hikers, kayakers and day visitors.

Short boat trips to caves such as Vrelo Cave, marked hiking and climbing routes along the canyon walls, and several small medieval monasteries and churches set into the limestone slopes. The area is used for kayaking, canyon-side walks and nature observation.

Monastic buildings and hermitages were established at various times in the medieval period and remain as cultural features within the canyon; natural cave systems and karst formations have been studied and explored by speleologists.

Matka Canyon lies on the Treska River about 10-20 km southwest of Skopje and occupies a wooded limestone gorge with steep cliffs and small reservoirs created by dams on the river.

• Proximity to Skopje: The canyon is about 15 km from central Skopje, making it a popular half-day trip for hiking, kayaking and short boat excursions.

What to See #

• Vrelo Cave: Vrelo Cave is a notable underwater cave and one of the deepest known caves in the region; short boat trips run from the canyon entrance to the cave mouth.
• Medieval monasteries: Sv. Andreja (St. Andrew) and other medieval monasteries are set on the canyon slopes; the churches date to the medieval period and contain fresco fragments and stone architecture.
