Matilo

Matilo is the site of a Roman-period military fort and settlement located in South Holland near modern Leiden and the Oude Rijn river. It is recognized as part of the network of Roman frontier installations along the Rhine in the Netherlands.

Remains at the site include fortifications and material culture uncovered in archaeological digs, and the location is used to interpret Roman military presence and local settlement patterns on the northern frontier. The visible features are limited and interpretation relies on excavated finds and onsite information panels.

Matilo was established and used during the Roman period as a fort and riverine control point and was occupied during the 1st through later Roman centuries as part of the Rhine limes. Archaeological work over the 20th and 21st centuries has documented structural traces and artefacts linked to Roman military and civilian activity.

The site sits close to the Oude Rijn in South Holland, within the modern urban and suburban fringe of Leiden and Leiderdorp. It lies in a lowland river landscape that was strategically important in Roman times for river transport and frontier defense.
