Matera Cathedral
Church Romanesque cathedral overlooking Matera's ancient Sassi district
In Matera’s Sassi district, the 13th‑century cathedral displays Romanesque architecture and marble altars; visitors combine the cathedral with walks through the cave dwellings and rupestrian churches.
Matera Cathedral is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Matera in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, constructed in the 13th century. It is a principal landmark in the historic center and an example of Apulian-Romanesque architecture.
The cathedral occupies the highest point of the Civita and overlooks the Sassi, the ancient cave-dwelling quarter of Matera that surrounds the lower slopes. Internally it follows a Romanesque plan with a nave and aisles, decorated altars and chapels that reflect its medieval origins.
Built in the 13th century, the cathedral was commissioned as the seat church for the city and reflects the regional Romanesque style influenced by Apulian architecture. Over centuries it has undergone restorations while retaining its medieval plan and prominent location.
Sited on the Civita hill in central Matera, the cathedral dominates the townscape and overlooks the Sassi districts that extend down the hillside.
