Matavera City
Village on Rarotonga island, Cook Islands
On Rarotonga’s flatter east coast Matavera serves as a low-key base for reef snorkelling, coconut plantations and roadside fish stalls; visitors rent scooters to reach nearby black-pepper sand beaches, Sunday church services and island-style cookouts.
Why Visit Matavera?#
On Rarotonga’s eastern coast, Matavera attracts visitors seeking Polynesian island life without the big-resort trappings. The village sits close to Rarotonga’s coral lagoon and the motorized ring road, so snorkeling, village homestays and beachside relaxation are easy to combine. Ika mata (raw fish in coconut) and traditional Ura dance performances give a direct taste of Cook Islands culture, while small craft stalls and friendly community events help travelers connect with island life.
