Matajur

Mountain Border mountain on Italy-Slovenia frontier

Border mountain straddling Slovenia and Italy, popular with hikers for ridgeline trails, alpine meadows and wide views that can include the Julian Alps and, on clear days, toward the Adriatic.

Main image

Matajur is a mountain on the Italy-Slovenia border with a summit at about 1,642 meters above sea level. It stands above the Soča Valley and is a prominent landmark on the ridge separating alpine and pre-alpine terrain.

The mountain is popular with hikers and offers broad views across the Soča valley, the Julian Alps, and toward the Adriatic coast when visibility is good. Routes approach the summit from small villages in the Municipality of Kobarid on the Slovenian side and from nearby Italian communities.

Matajur saw military action during World War I and the surrounding area contains historical traces related to that period. Today it is primarily visited for outdoor recreation and the panoramic viewpoints from the ridge.

Geographically the peak lies on the border zone between Slovenia and Italy, within walking distance of settlements in the Kobarid area and forming part of the ridge systems west of the Julian Alps.

  • Summit height and views: The summit reaches approximately 1,642 meters above sea level and provides panoramic views over the Soča valley and toward the Adriatic Sea on clear days.
  • Trails: Marked hiking trails lead to the summit from both the Slovenian and Italian sides; routes vary from moderate to strenuous depending on start point.
