Mountains High Alpine massif in southeastern France, hosts glaciers
The Écrins massif in the French Alps contains glaciated peaks such as the Barre des Écrins, alpine refuges and long technical routes-popular for mountaineering, glacier travel and summer high‑alpine hiking.
The Massif des Écrins is a mountainous massif in the French Alps, located in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Its highest point is the Barre des Écrins at 4,102 metres and the area forms the core of Écrins National Park.
The massif contains numerous peaks over 3,000 metres, extensive valley-to-summit glacier systems and long high-alpine ridges. It is a major destination for mountaineering, alpine climbing, glacier travel and multi-day hiking, with classic routes on peaks such as La Meije and glaciated approaches from the Glacier Blanc.
Alpine exploration and climbing in the Écrins intensified in the 19th century; the area later gained legal protection when Écrins National Park was created in 1973 to conserve its landscapes and biodiversity.
The range lies in southeastern France within the Dauphiné Alps; it is south of Grenoble and forms a prominent high-mountain area in the region, accessed from valleys and mountain towns on the park’s perimeter.
