Massalia
Archaeological Site Ancient Greek settlement that became modern Marseille
Massalia, the ancient Greek settlement that became Marseille, references the city’s Greek origins; visitors to modern Marseille come for the Vieux-Port, seafood like bouillabaisse and Notre-Dame de la Garde.
Massalia is the ancient Greek name for the settlement that developed into present-day Marseille on France’s Mediterranean coast. It was founded in antiquity and became an important trading port in the western Mediterranean.
As an historical place-name rather than a single monument, Massalia’s legacy is visible in Marseille’s Old Port, archaeological remains, and city layout that reflect centuries of maritime trade. Museums and local collections hold artifacts and displays tracing the city’s Greek and Roman past.
Established by Greek settlers from Phocaea in the early first millennium BC, Massalia became a major trading and maritime centre and later integrated into the Roman sphere. Over time it evolved through medieval and modern periods into France’s major Mediterranean port.
Historically located on the northern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, the site corresponds to the modern city of Marseille in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of southern France.
- Founding: founded as a Greek colony around the 6th century BC by settlers from Phocaea
- Geographic note: sits on the northern shore of the Mediterranean and developed into the modern city of Marseille
