Mas d'Azil Cave
Archaeological Site Large prehistoric cave with archaeological site and river
A large karst cave in Ariège with a road passing through its tunnel; the site draws visitors for Paleolithic archaeology, a museum, guided cave walks and riverside picnics.
The Mas d’Azil Cave is a large karst cave and archaeological site in the Ariège department of southwestern France. The site is a major Paleolithic and Mesolithic rock shelter and lent its name to the Azilian cultural period.
A distinctive feature is a wide tunnel through the rock that is traversed by a departmental road, allowing vehicles and pedestrians to pass through the cave entrance. The interior galleries contain prehistoric occupation layers and yielded tools and remains that defined the Azilian industry.
Excavations in the 19th and 20th centuries exposed stratified deposits showing extended prehistoric use of the shelter; finds from the site have been important in understanding the transition from Upper Paleolithic to Mesolithic cultures in southwestern France.
The cave lies at the village of Le Mas-d’Azil in Ariège, in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the Occitania region of southern France, and is easily reached by regional roads.
- Archaeological significance: The site gave its name to the Azilian prehistoric culture; archaeological excavations recovered microlithic tools and other Mesolithic finds.
- Access: A departmental road passes through the cave tunnel, making the site directly accessible by car and visible from the roadway.
