Marseille Cathedral
Church 19th-century cathedral overlooking Marseille's Old Port
Marseille’s Cathédrale de la Major presents 19th-century Romanesque-Byzantine architecture above the Old Port; visitors tour the interior, terraces and nearby Vieux-Port markets.
Marseille Cathedral (Cathédrale La Major) is a large 19th-century cathedral in Marseille combining Romanesque and Byzantine architectural elements. Construction took place over the latter half of the 19th century and the building is one of the city’s most prominent landmarks.
The cathedral’s exterior is notable for its striped stonework, wide façade and twin towers; inside are expansive nave spaces and decorative finishes typical of grand 19th-century ecclesiastical architecture. The terraces and quayside immediately below the building provide strong viewing angles for photography.
Built on the site of an earlier medieval cathedral, the present structure was erected in the mid-to-late 19th century and reflects the era’s historicist architectural trends. It was designed and completed across several decades during that century.
The cathedral stands at the waterfront near the Old Port (Vieux-Port) of Marseille, adjacent to Fort Saint-Jean and marking a visual transition between the harbour and the city’s central districts.
- Scale and date: The cathedral was constructed in the second half of the 19th century and is one of the largest religious buildings erected in France during that period.
- Best viewpoints: For the clearest exterior views, approach from the Old Port quayside or the nearby Fort Saint-Jean; interior access may be restricted during services.
