The mountain is glaciated near its upper slopes and is climbed by mountaineers who approach from either the Argentine or Chilean side; routes are high-altitude and typically require glacier travel skills. The peak is notable within the region for its prominence among neighboring Andean summits.
Marmolejo is a volcanic edifice formed as part of the Andean volcanic arc. It stands within the high, arid puna zone of the central Andes and is part of the continuous chain of high volcanoes along the continental divide.
