Marmolada
Mountain Highest Dolomite massif with permanent glacier and ski routes
Marmolada, the Dolomites’ highest massif, offers glacier skiing, via ferrata routes, a cable car to Punta Rocca and World War I tunnels that draw hikers and history visitors.
Marmolada is the highest massif in the Dolomites, straddling the border between Trentino and Veneto, with its highest summit, Punta Penia, reaching 3,343 metres.
Marmolada was the scene of heavy fighting in World War I between Austro-Hungarian and Italian forces, and the high routes still contain remains and memorials from that period. Over the 20th and 21st centuries the area developed for alpine tourism with lifts and marked trails.
Located in northeastern Italy in the Dolomite range, the massif lies on the border of Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto and is accessible from valley towns such as Canazei and Malga Ciapela.
- Highest Dolomite peak: The massif is the highest in the Dolomites and is a popular destination for mountaineering, glacier skiing and panoramic viewing from the Punta Penia summit.
- WWI history and safety: The area contains World War I open-air military remains along high routes; visitors should observe signage and stay on marked trails in high mountain areas.
What to See #
- Punta Penia (summit): Punta Penia is the highest point on the Marmolada massif and reaches an elevation of 3,343 metres, offering panoramic views over the Dolomites.
- Marmolada Glacier: The Marmolada Glacier sits on the northern slopes and has historically fed ski runs and high-mountain routes; it is the largest glacier in the Dolomites though it has been retreating in recent decades.
- Access lifts and cable car: Ski lifts and a cable car connect the glacier and summit areas with the valley at Malga Ciapela, providing access for skiers, hikers and climbers.
