Markermeer

Lake Shallow freshwater lake reclaimed from Zuiderzee

Inland lake in Flevoland created after Zuiderzee reclamation, separated from the IJsselmeer by dikes. Sailors, anglers and cyclists use the lakeshore routes and nearby polders for recreation.

Main image

The Markermeer is a shallow inland lake in the central Netherlands located between the provinces of North Holland and Flevoland. It occupies an area that was shaped by 20th‑century Dutch land‑and‑water engineering.

The lake is separated from the larger IJsselmeer by the long Houtribdijk causeway and serves both nature and recreational functions, supporting boating, fishing and birdlife. In recent years constructed islands and wetlands have been created in the Markermeer to restore habitat and attract wading and nesting birds.

Initial plans for land reclamation in parts of the basin were not fully pursued, leaving the body of water as a managed freshwater lake rather than reclaimed polder. The combination of dikes, sluices and managed water levels is typical of the Dutch approach to inland water management.

Geographically the Markermeer lies in central Netherlands and is bordered by towns such as Enkhuizen and Lelystad, with road and rail connections crossing the Houtribdijk.

  • Artificial lake and location: the lake is a shallow freshwater body created and defined by 20th century Dutch water‑management works and lies between the provinces of North Holland and Flevoland.
  • Separating dike: the Houtribdijk completed in the 1970s separates the Markermeer from the IJsselmeer and functions as a major causeway for road traffic and water management.

What to See #

  • Houtribdijk: the Houtribdijk (also called the Markerwaarddijk), the 27‑kilometre dike that separates the Markermeer from the main body of the IJsselmeer and links Enkhuizen and Lelystad.
  • Marker Wadden: the Marker Wadden, a recent nature‑development project consisting of constructed islands and wetlands for bird and habitat restoration within the lake.

How to Get to Markermeer #

The Markermeer is a large lake in Flevoland/ North Holland near Amsterdam. It’s readily reached by car from Amsterdam in roughly 30-45 minutes depending on traffic; major shore towns with access points include Marken, Volendam, Hoorn and Lelystad. Marken is accessible by a short ferry from Volendam, and all shoreline towns have local roads and parking with short walks to waterfront trails and viewpoints.

Tips for Visiting Markermeer #

  • Use Lelystad or Enkhuizen as bases for visiting the Markermeer: boat trips and nature-visit services to the Marker Wadden (the new nature islands) operate from Lelystad and are the best way to experience the lake's birdlife and reclaimed-nature projects.
  • Drive or cycle along the Houtribdijk (the long causeway between Enkhuizen and Lelystad) for unobstructed vistas across the lake; there are parking points and viewpoints where you can stop for birdwatching.
  • For birdwatching and calmer waters, plan early-morning visits and check boat-tour timetables in advance-the Marker Wadden and the lake attract day visitors, so tours and landing permits are best booked ahead.
