Marken
Island Former island community known for traditional wooden houses
Once an island in the IJsselmeer, Marken links to the mainland by causeway and preserves wooden houses, a fishing harbour and a local museum. Visitors cycle from Volendam, sample smoked eel and stroll the pier.
Marken is a small village and former island in the Markermeer off the coast of North Holland, Netherlands, known for its distinctive wooden houses and traditional fishing-community character. It was an island until the mid 20th century and today is part of the Waterland municipality.
The compact village centre features narrow streets, rows of painted wooden houses set on pile foundations and a small harbour; visitors move around on foot and the main public attractions are within a few hundred metres of each other. The causeway that links Marken to the mainland provides road access, and some boat services operate between Marken and nearby coastal towns in warmer months.
Historically a fishing and seafaring community, Marken retained strong local costume and craft traditions through the 19th and early 20th centuries; its status changed when a permanent causeway was completed in 1957, after which it became more integrated with the mainland. Local museums and preserved houses showcase the island’s maritime cultural heritage.
Marken sits on the Markermeer shore in North Holland, roughly northeast of Amsterdam and within the province’s coastal lowlands. The village occupies a narrow promontory and is close to other popular lakeside towns in the region.
- Causeway (1957): Reachable by a single causeway built in 1957 that ended its centuries-long isolation and now carries the main road link to the mainland.
- Architecture and best light: Traditional wooden houses on timber piles and a compact harbour area form the village's most-photographed scenes; best light for photos is early morning or late afternoon.
What to See #
- Marken village: Historic village core with narrow streets and tightly packed wooden houses painted green and other colors; a small harbor sits at the village edge where fishing boats and pleasure craft berth.
- Causeway and dike: Causeway and seawalls that connect the former island to the mainland since 1957, forming the main road access and shoreline protection.
- Marken museum: Local cultural museum documenting Marken's maritime and costume traditions, located in the village centre.
How to Get to Marken #
Marken is about 20-25 km northeast of Amsterdam. By public transport, take a train to Zaandam or Amsterdam and then regional bus services to Marken (buses from Amsterdam Central via Volendam/Edam). Driving: follow N247/Ringdijk routes and park in designated car parks outside the historic core.
Tips for Visiting Marken #
- Stay into the late afternoon to watch the last of the daytrippers leave - Marken's lanes are most pleasant when quieter.
- Walk the wooden causeway and explore the small local museum (Het Markens Museum) to learn about the island's history before it was connected to the mainland in 1957.
- Buy a pair of traditional clog-style souvenirs from a local crafts stall - the wooden shoes are a local cliché but well-made copies endure.
- Respect private property: many of Marken's iconic green houses are lived in and not showpieces.
Best Time to Visit Marken #
Summer gives the nicest weather for boating and photography; shoulder seasons offer quieter visits and strong northern light.
