Maritime Alps
Mountains Alpine mountain range between France and Italy
The Maritime Alps sit on the France-Italy border; hikers and skiers use its alpine trails, ski areas and high passes, and cross-border parks include Parco Naturale Alpi Marittime and Mercantour.
The Maritime Alps are a mountain range in the southwestern Alps that straddle the France-Italy border and form the coastal end of the Alpine chain. The range contains peaks above 3,000 metres and several protected natural areas.
Hikers and climbers visit for high alpine peaks such as Monte Argentera (around 3,297 m), extensive trail networks, and scenic passes. The juxtaposition of high mountains close to the Mediterranean gives steep landscapes, varied plant communities and panoramic coastal views from high ridges. Mountain huts, long-distance trekking routes and marked paths in Mercantour National Park and the Parco Naturale Alpi Marittime support multi-day itineraries.
The area has a long history of transalpine travel via mountain passes such as the Col de Tende; pastoralism and small alpine communities developed historically in sheltered valleys. In the 20th century sections of the range became formal protected areas on both the French and Italian sides.
The range runs along the border between southeastern France (Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur) and northwestern Italy (Piedmont and Liguria), descending toward the Mediterranean coast and separated from the sea by coastal foothills and river valleys.
- Geographic character: The Maritime Alps form the coastal segment of the Alps and include peaks above 3,000 metres that lie relatively close to the Mediterranean, producing sharp elevation and climate contrasts.
What to See #
- Monte Argentera: Monte Argentera is the highest massif in the Maritime Alps, reaching about 3,297 metres and featuring glaciated peaks and steep limestone ridges.
- Protected areas and parks: Mercantour National Park on the French side and the Parco Naturale Alpi Marittime on the Italian side protect extensive alpine habitat and hiking routes across the range.
- Col de Tende / Colle di Tenda: Colle di Tenda/Col de Tende is one of the main passes through the range that has historically linked Liguria and Provence and remains an important route between France and Italy.
How to Get to Maritime Alps #
The Maritime Alps are best reached by car from the provincial capital Cuneo (Piedmont) or from Nice on the French side. From Cuneo take the A6 motorway toward the coast then follow provincial roads into the Valle Gesso (toward Entracque) or other mountain valleys; many trailheads and mountain huts are reached via local SP (provincial) roads. Public transport into the high valleys is limited-use regional buses to valley towns and expect short drives or hikes from those bus stops to reach alpine trails.
Tips for Visiting Maritime Alps #
- Aim for early morning in late spring through early autumn for the clearest mountain light and quieter trails; many of the higher trails are snowbound outside that window.
- Use Entracque or Valdieri as your main Italian gateways into the Parco Naturale delle Alpi Marittime-those towns host park information and the most maintained trailheads.
- To avoid the busiest ridge routes, explore lower-elevation valleys and alpine meadows (often less visited) where you can still get excellent views of the high peaks and wildlife activity.
Best Time to Visit Maritime Alps #
For most visitors, late spring to early autumn (June-September) is best for access and hiking; winter is for snow sports and experienced mountaineers.
