Mariana, Corsica Ruins

Mariana is an ancient settlement on Corsica’s northeastern coast, founded as a Roman town in the 1st century BC. The site contains remains from its Roman foundation alongside later medieval and ecclesiastical structures.

Archaeological remains include Roman foundations and the ruins of a later cathedral with an associated baptistry; visitors can inspect the visible masonry and interpretive panels at the site. The location also offers views over the coastal plain and adjacent wetlands.

Founded in the late Roman Republic period, the town developed through antiquity and became the seat of a bishopric in the medieval period. Over time the population shifted to nearby coastal settlements and the site declined, leaving the surviving ruins.

The ruins lie close to the modern town of Lucciana on Corsica’s northeastern coast, a few kilometres south of Bastia and adjacent to the Biguglia lagoon.

Mariana is reached by regional roads from Ajaccio and Calvi depending on which side of the island one approaches from. The nearest larger towns are a drive away; the narrow island roads are the obvious way to explore - take care with hairpin turns and local traffic.

• Visit early morning to avoid strong summer heat and to catch the island waking up.
• The village streets are narrow - park outside the small centre and walk through the lanes.
• Try local chestnut and brocciu-based pastries in the village cafés; Corsican cuisine is rustic and satisfying.
