Maria Island National Park
Park Island national park with abundant wildlife and convict ruins
Off Tasmania’s east coast, Maria Island National Park protects convict ruins, coastal walks, beaches and populations of wallabies, wombats and seabirds-popular for hiking, wildlife viewing and history.
Maria Island National Park is a protected island reserve off the east coast of Tasmania known for its convict-era ruins, geological features and abundant wildlife. The island combines cultural history and natural attractions across a largely vehicle-free landscape.
Heritage remains include the convict-era Darlington Probation Station with surviving buildings and yards, which form part of Australia’s convict-era sites of significance. Coastal features such as the Painted Cliffs and the Fossil Cliffs are major drawcards, while inland tracks lead to viewpoints and areas of dense wildlife including wombats, wallabies and abundant birdlife.
Outdoor recreation focuses on walking, wildlife viewing and heritage interpretation rather than vehicle-based touring; accommodation is limited to camping and a small number of self-catering options. Services on the island are basic so day visits and short overnight stays are common.
European use of the island includes 19th-century convict occupation and later farming and industrial activity; many surviving buildings date from this period and have been the subject of conservation. The island’s combination of archaeological, historic and natural values underpins its protected status and visitor management.
Located off Tasmania’s east coast, Maria Island is reached by a short ferry crossing from the port township of Triabunna; the crossing time is typically under an hour and schedules depend on season and operator.
