Marche Travel Guide
Region
Marche offers Adriatic beaches, hill towns like Urbino with its 15th-century Palazzo Ducale, Renaissance architecture and the Frasassi Caves. Travelers come for seafood, country ham, cycling routes and small medieval villages.
Why Visit Marche #
Urbino is Raphael’s birthplace and a compact Renaissance jewel - the Ducal Palace and its studiolo are must-sees for art and architecture fans. Walk the cobbled streets to museums and student-run cafés; the city feels like a living workshop of Renaissance ideas. Avoid midday crowds by starting early.
The Grotte di Frasassi are a dramatic karst complex with vast chambers, limestone formations and guided routes down into the cavern system. The caves are family-friendly but the guided walkways still inspire a real sense of scale. Nearby countryside offers agriturismi serving local olive and truffle dishes.
Verdicchio di Matelica and Castelli di Jesi are Marche’s signature whites, pairing perfectly with Adriatic seafood. Wineries around Jesi and Matelica offer cellar tours and tastings, often combined with rustic lunches. Autumn harvest events are a relaxed way to meet winemakers and try barrel samples.
The Conero Riviera near Ancona mixes pebble coves, cliff-top hiking and swimming in clear Adriatic water - Portonovo bay is a popular natural anchor. Coastal walking paths connect small beaches and fishing hamlets where grilled fish and brodetto are done well. Summer draws day-trippers; head for early morning quiet.
Ascoli Piceno and smaller hill towns serve excellent regional food: try olive ascolane (fried stuffed olives), hearty brodetto, and rustic cavatelli. Walking cobbled squares and sampling local pastries give a real taste of inland Marche life. Slow travel here rewards visits to family-run trattorie.
Who's Marche For?
Urbino’s hilltop streets and Conero’s cliffside beaches offer classic Italian romance with Renaissance art and Adriatic sunsets.
Gentle beaches at Senigallia and educational trips to the Frasassi Caves suit families; many seaside towns are child-friendly in summer.
Sibillini Mountains and pilgrim trails provide solid trekking with simple mountain huts and affordable hostels for active backpackers.
Provincial towns offer reliable Wi‑Fi and calm work spots, but there are fewer international coworking hubs compared with larger Italian cities.
Brodetto fish stew, ciauscolo salami and local truffles reward food lovers seeking rustic Adriatic and mountain cuisine.
Hiking and via ferrata in the Sibillini, sea-kayaking off Monte Conero and cave exploration at Frasassi please outdoor types.
Summer beach bars and seasonal festivals create lively nights in towns like Senigallia, but nightlife quiets outside high season.
Sibillini National Park, coastal cliffs of Conero and the subterranean world of Frasassi make Marche very attractive to nature lovers.

Getting to & Around Marche #
Ancona Falconara Airport (AOI) and Ancona Centrale railway station are the principal gateways; the A14 autostrada runs along the coast linking Marche to Bologna and Pescara. Coastal rail services give frequent north-south connections, while airports serve limited direct international routes, expanding seasonally.
Marche is narrow between the Adriatic coast and the Apennines: coastal travel is well served by frequent rail and autostrada links, but inland hill towns require car or regional bus travel. Expect short coastal hops but longer, slower journeys uphill into the interior.
- Airports - Ancona Falconara Airport (AOI) is Marche’s main airport with domestic and some international links; Rimini and Pescara airports are also used seasonally. Ancona Centrale station on the Adriatic railway connects the region north-south by train.
- Trains - The Adriatic railway (Bologna-Bari) runs through coastal Marche with frequent regional and intercity trains serving Ancona, Pesaro and Fermo, making coastal travel by rail convenient. Use Trenitalia for schedules and connections.
- Rental Car - A car is useful for reaching hill towns (Urbino, Macerata) and villages in the Apennines where rail is sparse; the A14 autostrada skirts the coast and provides fast north-south driving. Mountain roads can be narrow and slower than they appear on the map.
- Ferries to Croatia - Ancona has regular seasonal ferry services to Croatian ports (operator examples include SNAV and Jadrolinija), useful for island hops and international coastal itineraries in summer.
Where to Stay in Marche #
Marche offers a mix of coastal resorts, hilltown B&Bs and agriturismos in rural areas. Conero Riviera and Senigallia draw summer beachgoers, while hill towns like Urbino and the Sibillini Mountains attract cultural and hiking visitors year-round.
Urbino hinterlands and the rolling hills near Fermo and Ascoli Piceno have numerous agriturismos offering home-cooked meals and simple countryside rooms. Ideal for food-focused travellers and vineyard visits.
Senigallia, Numana and Sirolo on the Conero Riviera host family-run hotels and seaside resorts popular in summer. Book early for July-August and seek rooms near the Spiaggia and harbour for easy beach access.
Families and groups commonly rent apartments in Porto Recanati, Ancona and small coastal towns for flexible stays. Urban apartments in Urbino and seaside rentals are convenient for off-season cultural and coastal trips.
Historic towns like Urbino and Ascoli Piceno have many B&Bs and guesthouses in the old centres, offering local breakfasts and proximity to main sights. These suit short stays focused on culture and cuisine.
Sibillini Mountains provide rifugi and mountain huts for hikers, particularly on trails around Monte Vettore. Services are seasonal and often basic; check opening dates during spring and autumn trekking seasons.
Coastal campsites and a few glamping options near the Conero coast accommodate families and outdoor travellers. Summer occupancy is high, so reserve pitches or glamping pods early for peak weeks.
