Mar Chiquita Lake

Mar Chiquita (also called Mar de Ansenuza) is a large saline, endorheic lake in Córdoba Province, Argentina, notable for its fluctuating extent and importance as a wetland. The lake periodically expands to cover several thousand square kilometres depending on seasonal and multi-year hydrological cycles.

Shallow open water, mudflats and salt pans attract large numbers of waterbirds; during high-water periods thousands of flamingos, gulls and other waders can concentrate on the lake. There are seasonal shorelines and observation points rather than formal visitor facilities, and access is by provincial roads and small local towns.

The lake occupies an endorheic basin fed by regional rivers and runoff; its area has expanded and contracted repeatedly in historical records, with notable high stands in the 20th and 21st centuries. Local land use and hydrology have influenced the lake’s water balance over time.

Situated in north-eastern Córdoba Province, the lake lies within a flat, semi-arid plain of central Argentina, with the nearest provincial towns providing access and services; it is several hours by road from the provincial capital, Córdoba.
