Main image

Mar Chiquita (also called Mar de Ansenuza) is a large saline, endorheic lake in Córdoba Province, Argentina, notable for its fluctuating extent and importance as a wetland. The lake periodically expands to cover several thousand square kilometres depending on seasonal and multi-year hydrological cycles.

Shallow open water, mudflats and salt pans attract large numbers of waterbirds; during high-water periods thousands of flamingos, gulls and other waders can concentrate on the lake. There are seasonal shorelines and observation points rather than formal visitor facilities, and access is by provincial roads and small local towns.

The lake occupies an endorheic basin fed by regional rivers and runoff; its area has expanded and contracted repeatedly in historical records, with notable high stands in the 20th and 21st centuries. Local land use and hydrology have influenced the lake’s water balance over time.

Situated in north-eastern Córdoba Province, the lake lies within a flat, semi-arid plain of central Argentina, with the nearest provincial towns providing access and services; it is several hours by road from the provincial capital, Córdoba.

  • Size variability: Surface area varies substantially with rainfall and river inflow, expanding to several thousand square kilometres in high-water years, so shoreline and bird concentrations change seasonally.
  • Birdlife viewing: Important habitat for waterbirds, including large congregations of flamingos and other waders during favourable conditions - bring binoculars and expect uneven road access to viewing points.

Tips for Visiting Mar Chiquita Lake #

  • Time birdwatching trips for spring and summer when migratory and resident waterbirds (including flamingos) are most visible, and use the small towns such as Miramar as base points for accessing the lake's observation spots.
  • Use the provincial roads and designated viewpoints rather than trying to drive onto the salt flats-official observation areas provide safer, better-preserved vantage points and usually have parking or basic visitor information.
  • Consult local conservation or reserve authorities about current water levels and accessible sectors before traveling: the lake's shoreline and viewing opportunities can change after heavy rains or prolonged drought.
