Manus Island is the largest island in the Admiralty Islands archipelago and is the administrative centre of Manus Province in northern Papua New Guinea. The island’s main town and port is Lorengau.

The island and surrounding isles played a strategic role during the Pacific campaign of World War II and contain military sites and wartime remains. Manus is also a centre for local fisheries, small‑scale agriculture and inter‑island transport within the archipelago.

In the postwar period the island has hosted a range of naval and support facilities on adjacent isles, and it remains the primary population and service hub for Manus Province. Marine and coastal environments around the island support diving and reef activities.

Manus lies north of the New Guinea mainland in the Bismarck Sea and is part of Papua New Guinea’s island province system.

  • Province seat: the largest island of the Admiralty Islands group and the administrative centre of Manus Province.
  • WWII heritage: contains numerous World War II sites and remnants of wartime infrastructure that are visible at several locations.

How to Get to Manus Island #

Manus Island’s main town is Lorengau, served by Momote Airport (Lorengau). Scheduled domestic flights operate between Port Moresby (and other larger PNG centres) and Lorengau with PNG carriers; from Momote Airport it’s a short drive into Lorengau township. The island can also be reached by boat connections from nearby islands and mainland PNG ports.

Tips for Visiting Manus Island #

  • Access to Manus Island is limited and mostly through Lorengau; air services are infrequent, so book flights and any onward boat transfers well in advance and confirm schedules before travel.
  • Check current travel advisories and entry requirements for Papua New Guinea and obtain any necessary permits-Manus has remote communities and differing local regulations, and security conditions can change.
  • Arrange a local guide or contact a host before arrival: road and coastal transport infrastructure is basic, and guided local knowledge is essential for reaching villages and safe coastal sites.
