Archaeological Site Ancient Arcadian city, site of classical battles
In Arcadia’s rolling hills, Mantinea preserves remains of the classical city-state-fortifications, agora traces and field terraces. Archaeology-minded visitors explore the excavated ruins and surrounding olive groves and mountain roads.
Mantinea was an ancient city-state in Arcadia in the central Peloponnese, Greece, known in antiquity for its strategic location and military history. It played a significant role in regional Greek politics during the classical period.
The plain of Mantinea was the setting for important military engagements between major Greek powers, including a decisive battle in 418 BC during the Peloponnesian War and the 362 BC battle in which the Theban general Epaminondas was killed. The city participated in Arcadian federations and alliances at various times in classical Greek history.
Archaeological remains include traces of city walls, road layouts and habitation layers dating to the classical and Hellenistic periods. Over time the ancient urban site fell into decline and the population dispersed into the surrounding countryside.
Mantinea is located in the central Peloponnese region of Greece, within the territory historically known as Arcadia, situated on a fertile plain surrounded by low hills.
