Mangart
Mountain High Julian Alps peak popular for scenic climbs
A Julian Alps peak on the Slovenia-Italy border, Mangart features a narrow paved saddle road and alpine climbing routes. Hikers and drivers use the pass for ridge walks and mountain panoramas.
Mangart is a prominent mountain in the Julian Alps that lies on the border between Slovenia and Italy. Its summit reaches 2,679 metres and it is a well-known peak for hikers and climbers in the region.
The mountain is accessed from the Slovenian side near the town of Bovec and from Italian approaches; routes vary from steep walks to more technical climbs. A high mountain road leads to the Mangart Saddle and provides access to trailheads near the upper slopes.
The massif forms part of the Julian Alps chain and offers panoramic views over alpine valleys on both sides of the border.

How to Get to Mangart #
Mangart (Mangart Peak) is reached from the Breginj/Bovec area in the Julian Alps. Drive to the village of Log pod Mangartom (from Bovec) and then take the narrow Mangart Road (Mangartska cesta) up toward the Mangart Saddle; the mountain road is steep, narrow and often seasonal, so check conditions before driving. Park at the saddle and continue on foot on the marked hiking routes to the summit.
Tips for Visiting Mangart #
- Go early in the summer season when Mangart Road (Mangartska cesta) is open; early starts secure clearer views and parking at the Mangart Saddle before coach traffic builds.
- Drive the high road to the Mangart Saddle to reach the main trailheads-check locally whether the road is gated or closed on the day of your visit, as it is often inaccessible outside the high season.
- Allow time at the saddle for the short, exposed scramble toward the summit-many underestimate the rocky alpine terrain and the need to plan descent time before afternoon weather changes.
Best Time to Visit Mangart #
The best time to visit Mangart is in summer (June-September) when trails and the high road are most likely to be open and snow-free.
