Malbork Castle
Castle Largest brick castle complex of the Teutonic Order
On the Nogat River, Malbork Castle is a vast 13th-century Teutonic fortress built in brick; visitors explore ramparts, a museum of medieval arms and the castle’s defensive layout.
Malbork Castle is a large medieval fortress built by the Teutonic Order in northern Poland and is notable for its size and brick Gothic architecture. Construction began in the late 13th century and the site became the order’s main stronghold and administrative centre.
The complex includes multiple concentric wards and extensive defensive walls, with restored interiors that display medieval halls, chapels and living quarters. Tours cover the High, Middle and Lower Castle sections and the assembled fortifications, giving a clear sense of the site’s military and administrative scale.
The castle was founded and expanded by the Teutonic Knights from the late 1200s through the 14th century, later passing into Polish royal hands and undergoing various restoration campaigns in the 19th and 20th centuries. Restoration since the 20th century has aimed to preserve the brickwork and internal layouts for museum use.
The fortress stands on the Nogat River in the town of Malbork in northern Poland, within Pomeranian Voivodeship. It is commonly visited from the Tricity area, with Gdańsk located to the north-west of Malbork.
- Scale: Constructed largely of brick from the late 13th century onward, it is widely described as one of the largest brick castles in the world and retains extensive medieval fortifications.
- Museum: Operates as a museum with restored interiors, exhibition spaces and guided routes through the defensive complexes and courtyards.

Tips for Visiting Malbork Castle #
- Visit early in the morning or late afternoon (outside the midday tour-bus rush) for cooler light and far fewer people when exploring the courtyards and rooms.
- Enter via the main High Castle (Zamek Wysoki) area where the ticket office and official guided tours start - that's the best hub for orientation and to join timed museum routes.
- Buy tickets online or at opening time to skip queues, then head straight to the towers and fortifications first; many visitors linger only in the central courtyards and miss the extensive defensive walls and bastions.
Best Time to Visit Malbork Castle #
