Malakula
Island Large Vanuatu island with diverse tribal cultures
Malakula, one of Vanuatu’s largest islands, draws travelers interested in kastom villages, mask-making and traditional ceremonies, along with snorkeling, reef and coastal walking routes on sparsely populated shores.
Malakula is one of Vanuatu’s largest islands, located in Malampa Province in the central South Pacific and noted for its strong living traditions and cultural diversity. The island combines rugged interior highlands with coastal villages and reef-fringed bays.
A destination for cultural tourism, the island is known for traditional men’s societies, elaborate ceremonial dress and ritual performances. Outdoor visitors also find hiking across volcanic ridges, river valleys and beaches, with opportunities for community-based cultural encounters.
Malakula has been continuously inhabited by Melanesian peoples for millennia and was incorporated into colonial-era administrative structures in the 19th and 20th centuries. Missionary activity and later colonial rule influenced settlement patterns, but many kastom institutions persist.
Geographically the island sits in the New Hebrides archipelago (Vanuatu), west of Ambrym and southeast of Espiritu Santo. It is reached by inter-island boat or domestic air services from ports and airports on other Vanuatu islands.
- Language diversity: Around thirty indigenous languages and many local dialects are spoken across the island, making it one of the most linguistically diverse places per land area in Vanuatu.
- Kastom villages: Traditional kastom villages maintain customary governance and ceremonies; respectful visits often require prior permission from village chiefs and observance of local protocols.
What to See #
- Cultural regions: A patchwork of tribal regions across the island historically identified by clothing styles and social groups, notably the **Big Nambas** and **Small Nambas** areas, each associated with distinct traditional dress, tattooing and cultural practices.
- Coastal villages: Coastal villages and bays where local communities practice fishing and subsistence agriculture; many coastal settlements provide access points for visitors and community-based cultural experiences.
How to Get to Malakula #

Once ashore, travel around the island is by local roads, taxis or arranged transfers to villages and resorts.
Tips for Visiting Malakula #
- Confirm air and ferry schedules well in advance-Malakula is served by small regional flights and inter-island ferries and connections can be irregular, so allow flexible travel time.
- Hire a local guide to visit kastom villages and cultural sites; guided visits both open up permission-based experiences and ensure you approach communities respectfully (ask before photographing).
- Bring sufficient cash and supplies for inland travel-tourist infrastructure, ATMs and services outside main ports are limited, and road conditions inland often require extra travel time and a rugged vehicle.
