Málaga Cathedral

Málaga Cathedral is a cathedral in the historic centre of Málaga, Andalusia, Spain, built in Renaissance and Baroque styles. Construction began in 1528 and continued intermittently into the late 18th century, giving the building a mix of architectural influences.

The interior contains richly decorated chapels and a large choir area reflecting Renaissance and Baroque craftsmanship; visitors often note its ornate stonework and carved details. The cathedral is famous for its incomplete south tower, which gives it the local nickname “La Manquita.”

The cathedral was erected on the site of a former mosque after the Christian reconquest of Málaga; work began in the early 16th century and continued through successive campaigns into the 18th century. Different architects and styles contributed to its mix of Renaissance proportions and later Baroque additions.

Located in Málaga’s historic centre, the cathedral sits close to the Alcazaba and the Roman theatre and forms a central landmark within walking distance of the city’s main plazas and museums.
