Majuro Atoll
Area Capital atoll of Marshall Islands with coral islets
Urban atoll serving as the capital of the Marshall Islands with a lagoon-ringed town, local markets and WWII relics. Visitors come for lagoon swimming, fishing and to experience Marshallese daily life.
Majuro Atoll is a coral atoll in the Ralik Chain of the Marshall Islands and serves as the national capital. It is the country’s primary population and administrative center.
The atoll’s lagoon and fringing islets are the main draws, with swimming, snorkeling and local boat trips operating from the main urban strip. The clustered urban area sprawls along a narrow reef platform and contains shops, markets and government buildings, making it the arrival point for most visitors to the country.
The atoll was traditionally settled by Marshallese communities. It came under German then Japanese administration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was occupied by United States forces during World War II in January 1944. After the war Majuro became part of the U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands and later the capital of the independent Republic of the Marshall Islands.
Majuro sits in the central Pacific Ocean within the Marshall Islands, on the southeastern edge of its surrounding lagoon. The atoll’s built-up strip is concentrated on a narrow reef platform; most services and transport links are located there.
