Museum Former Nazi concentration camp preserved as memorial
At Lublin, Majdanek State Museum preserves a Nazi concentration camp site with barracks, gas chamber ruins and exhibitions documenting the Holocaust. Visitors encounter memorial monuments and historical displays.
Majdanek State Museum preserves the site of the Majdanek Nazi concentration and extermination camp on the outskirts of Lublin, Poland. The museum maintains original camp structures, ruins and memorial areas and presents exhibitions documenting the camp’s operation and the victims killed there.
Exhibits and outdoor preserved features focus on the camp’s use between 1941 and 1944, including prisoner barracks, administrative buildings, crematoria and boundary structures. The site combines archaeological remains, museum displays and commemorative monuments to provide historical context and remembrance.
The camp was established and operated by Nazi Germany during World War II and was liberated in 1944; after the war the grounds were preserved and converted into a state museum and memorial. The museum documents wartime administration, deportations and the experiences of prisoners through artifacts, testimonies and preserved architecture.
The museum and memorial are located on the eastern outskirts of the city of Lublin, in eastern Poland, set on the flat land where the camp originally stood.
