Mainz Citadel

The Mainz Citadel is an early modern fortress complex on a hill above the old town of Mainz in Rhineland-Palatinate. It comprises thick bastioned walls, ramparts and internal buildings that reflect phases of military construction on a site used since Roman times.

The visible fortifications date chiefly from early modern and later periods when the hill was converted into a citadel to control the city and the Rhine approaches. Surviving features include bastions, parade areas and vaulted underground chambers that served military functions.

Over time the citadel passed through varied control and was adapted by successive regimes for defensive use; in later centuries parts have been repurposed for civic, cultural and museum uses. Conservation work has opened sections for visitors and events while maintaining the defensive fabric.

It sits immediately adjacent to Mainz’s historic centre, on the left bank of the Rhine, offering direct views over the city and river and easy access from central Mainz.
