Mainau is an island in Lake Constance (Bodensee) in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, known as the “Flower Island” for its extensive gardens, arboretum and seasonal floral displays. The island is managed as a park and botanical attraction with formal gardens, specimen trees and conservatories.

Formal flowerbeds, a large palm house and greenhouses featuring subtropical species, and an arboretum with mature exotic trees. The island’s castle and terraces provide viewpoints over the lake and parkland, and seasonal events and exhibitions are staged throughout the year.

The estate was developed over the 19th and 20th centuries into a public attraction; in the 20th century it was owned and transformed by Count Lennart Bernadotte and is now run by a foundation that maintains the gardens and visitor facilities. Regular boat services and road links connect the island with nearby Lake Constance towns.

Mainau lies in the western part of Lake Constance near the German shore, within easy reach of Konstanz and Meersburg; it is one of the lake’s principal tourist islands.

How to Get to Mainau #

Mainau (the Flower Island) is on the German shore of Lake Constance near Konstanz. From Konstanz town centre it is about a 10-15 minute drive (roughly 6-8 km) to the island; regular regional buses and in summer tourist boats depart Konstanz harbour for Mainau. Mainau also has visitor parking and is reachable by local bus services from Konstanz railway station.

Aim to arrive at Mainau when the island opens or late afternoon to avoid the busiest hours when day-trip boat crowds from Konstanz and Friedrichshafen tend to converge.
Combine a boat landing with an island ticket if possible - many visitors arrive by tour boats, and using regional boat services can cut travel time and reduce road traffic delays.
Don't skip the palm house and the subtropical greenhouses: these indoor collections (including seasonal butterfly displays at times) are often quieter than the outer gardens and showcase species visitors miss on the formal garden circuit.
