Main image

Mainalo (also Menalon) is a mountain massif in the Arcadia region of the central Peloponnese, Greece, with its highest summit rising to roughly 1,980 meters. It is an important local natural landmark and recreational area for Arcadia.

The area offers marked hiking routes, highland plateaus and extensive fir and pine woodland with panoramic views over Arcadia. Visitors commonly combine walks with visits to nearby traditional mountain villages such as Vytina and Stemnitsa.

The massif has been known since antiquity as part of the Arcadian uplands and has longstanding ties to local pastoral and forest economies. Over time the slopes have remained a rural landscape of villages, shepherd routes and woodland rather than a major urban centre.

Mainalo occupies a central position in Arcadia in the Peloponnese, roughly inland from the eastern and western coasts of the peninsula and within driving distance of the city of Tripoli and surrounding mountain villages.

  • Best seasons: Best visited in spring and autumn when trails are dry and the mountain flora is most active.
  • Mountain conditions: Higher slopes are covered in fir and pine; weather can change quickly above the tree line so carry warm layers and navigation aids.

What to See #

  • Profitis Ilias (peak): The highest point on the massif is Profitis Ilias, a marked summit used as a reference for local hikes and views.
  • Local trails and villages: A network of waymarked footpaths links traditional Arcadian villages such as Vytina and Stemnitsa to highland trails and shepherd routes.
  • Long-distance hiking route: A long-distance waymarked route crosses the mountain massif and is commonly used for multi-day hikes between mountain villages and refuges.

Regional buses connect Tripoli with Vytina; from either village many trails and forest roads lead uphill. Access by private car is easiest for reaching dispersed trailheads.

Tips for Visiting Mainalo #

  • Approach the slopes from the villages of Vytina or Stemnitsa to avoid the busier road up from Tripoli.
  • Hike the Menalon Trail section here in spring (April-May) for carpets of crocus and anemone.
  • In winter, expect icy tracks above 1,600 m-microspikes or crampons are recommended; many signposted paths are not maintained for winter use.
