Maillezais Cathedral

Maillezais Cathedral is the ruined medieval cathedral and former abbey complex at Maillezais in the Pays de la Loire region. The visible remains date mainly from the Romanesque and Gothic periods and stand within a drained marsh landscape.

The site offers masonry ruins of nave walls, towers and cloister fragments set amid lowland marsh channels; visitors commonly view the complex from on-site paths and by small boat on nearby canals. The architecture displays both early medieval and later Gothic elements, reflecting prolonged construction and modification.

The ecclesiastical complex originated as a monastic foundation in the medieval period and later served as a cathedral-seat for the local diocese before church properties were secularised. It experienced damage and secular transformation during the upheavals of the early modern period and the French Revolution.

Maillezais sits in the Vendée department adjacent to the Marais Poitevin marshes, in western France. The ruins are approached from nearby towns such as Fontenay-le-Comte and are set in a low-lying, reclaimed wetland landscape.
