Mountains Abruzzo mountain massif and protected national park
Steep limestone peaks in Abruzzo form Maiella National Park, with alpine meadows, carved hermitages and marked trails for hiking and wildlife watching-visitors come for mountain trekking, pastoral heritage and seasonal wildflowers.
Maiella is a limestone massif in the central Apennines of Abruzzo, Italy, notable for its high peaks and extensive mountain plateaus. The massif is the core of Maiella National Park and has long-standing cultural and natural significance.
The main visitor attractions are mountain hikes and summit ascents, with Monte Amaro the highest peak at 2,793 metres. The massif hosts long-distance trails, rugged karst landscapes, caves and cliffs used by walkers and mountaineers.
The Maiella area contains numerous medieval hermitages and religious sites associated with solitary monastic life, most famously connected with Pietro da Morrone (Pope Celestine V) in the 13th century. Modern protection under the national park conserves endemic flora and mountain fauna while supporting outdoor recreation.
