Magdalena Island, Magallanes Region

Magdalena Island (Isla Magdalena) lies in the Strait of Magellan off the coast of southern Chile’s Magallanes Region. It is best known for its large colony of Magellanic penguins and for a small historic lighthouse on the island.

Visitors most commonly arrive by boat on organized tours from Punta Arenas; landings allow close viewing of the penguin colony during the austral spring and summer months. Walkways and marked routes keep visitors at a respectful distance from breeding areas while permitting extended observation of wildlife.

Historically the island has served as a navigational point in the Strait of Magellan and the lighthouse has guided shipping through the region. Human use has been limited to lighthouse keepers and seasonal tourist visits rather than permanent settlements.

The island sits in the Strait of Magellan within Chile’s southern archipelagic waters, off the coast of continental Tierra del Fuego and near the city of Punta Arenas in the Magallanes Region.
