Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley

The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley is a glacial mountain valley in Andorra recognised for its intact pastoral landscape and traditional mountain land use. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its cultural and natural values.

The valley contains a network of mountain tracks linking pastures, historic stone shepherd huts (bordes) and small terraces, offering hiking routes that illustrate traditional seasonal grazing and local mountain practices rather than large visitor facilities. Interpretive panels and marked trails help explain the valley’s pastoral heritage.

Used for centuries for seasonal grazing and small-scale agriculture, the valley preserves field systems, temporary dwellings and routes connected to pastoral transhumance. Its continuity of traditional land use contributed to its UNESCO inscription and ongoing conservation.

Located in the mountainous interior of Andorra, the valley occupies a high-mountain setting southeast of the main population centres and is accessed from nearby mountain parishes and trailheads.
