Madinat al-Zahra is a ruined 10th-century Umayyad palace-city and archaeological complex located west of Córdoba in Andalusia, Spain. Built as a planned administrative and ceremonial centre, it served as a seat of power for the Caliphate of Córdoba.
Excavations reveal terraced palaces, audience halls and mosque foundations, with richly decorated rooms and evidence of extensive urban planning. A visitor centre and museum at the site display artefacts and explain the city’s layout and significance.
The city was founded by Caliph Abd al-Rahman III in the mid-900s as a caliphal residence and administrative seat and was occupied for only a few generations before decline and abandonment in the early 11th century amid political turmoil. Archaeological work has been ongoing since the 20th century and continues to reveal the complex’s plan and decoration.
The site sits roughly 8 kilometres west of Córdoba and is accessible by road; it is presented as an archaeological park with trails and interpretive facilities.
