Maddalena archipelago
Islands Archipelago north of Sardinia with protected beaches
An archipelago off northern Sardinia, the Maddalena islands feature limestone coves, clear water and a national park. Visitors charter boats, snorkel, sail and explore the town of La Maddalena.
The Maddalena archipelago is a group of islands off the northeast coast of Sardinia, characterised by granitic islands, clear turquoise waters and a mix of inhabited and protected natural areas. The group is managed for conservation and tourism and is a popular destination for sailing, day trips and beach visits from Sardinia.
Notable islands include La Maddalena (the principal town and port), Caprera (associated with the 19th-century leader Giuseppe Garibaldi) and smaller islets such as Budelli and Spargi known for secluded beaches and scenic anchorages. Waters around the islands are largely protected as part of a national park and marine reserve, and visitor activities are regulated.
Historically the islands have been used for fishing, seasonal grazing and, in the 19th and 20th centuries, as strategic naval points; Garibaldi spent his later years on Caprera and his house there is preserved as a memorial. Modern conservation measures limit development and control access to sensitive shorelines.
The archipelago sits off the coast of northern Sardinia, north of the Costa Smeralda, and is accessed by ferry services from Palau and by private boat. The islands form a chain between Sardinia and Corsica and are visited mainly in the warmer months.
- Protected status: The archipelago is protected within a national park and marine reserve, so visitor numbers and activities are regulated to protect beaches and marine life.
- Access and seasonality: Seasonal ferries run from Palau on Sardinia to the main island; the area is busiest in July and August and some beaches are closed or access-restricted to protect fragile environments.
What to See #
- La Maddalena (town): La Maddalena town on the island of the same name, serving as the archipelago's main port and administrative centre with ferry links to the Sardinian mainland.
- Caprera: Caprera island, known for its association with Giuseppe Garibaldi and the historical house-museum and memorials related to him.
- Budelli and Spargi: Budelli and Spargi, smaller islands noted for secluded beaches and clear water; Budelli contains the shoreline once known as the Pink Beach, now strictly protected and access-restricted.
How to Get to Maddalena archipelago #
The Maddalena Archipelago is reached by ferry from the Sardinian mainland. Regular car-and-passenger ferries and frequent boat excursions sail from Palau to La Maddalena (the crossing is short - typically around 15-25 minutes), and private boat operators also run tours from nearby ports.
Palau is the usual embarkation point on northeast Sardinia; from Olbia it is roughly a 30-45 minute drive to Palau, where you can park and take the ferry to the archipelago.
Tips for Visiting Maddalena archipelago #
- Use the short car or bus link from Palau to La Maddalena and then local ferries to hop between islands; the main ferry terminal in Palau is the usual gateway for visitors to the archipelago.
- If you want quieter coves such as Cala Coticcio (Caprera) or lesser‑visited beaches, take an early boat or a smaller private excursion - most day‑boats arrive mid‑day and the popular beaches get crowded by late morning.
- Allow time to cross to Caprera via the causeway to visit Garibaldi's house and the island's walking trails; the roads are narrow in high season, so plan parking or resort drop‑offs accordingly.
