Lutherhaus

The Lutherhaus in Wittenberg is the former residence of Martin Luther and now operates as a museum dedicated to his life and the Protestant Reformation. The building originated as part of an Augustinian monastic complex and is a central site in Wittenberg’s Reformation heritage.

Exhibits present original objects, documents and interpretive displays about Luther, his household and the broader 16th-century Reformation movement; visitors can see rooms restored to reflect their historic use. The site also contains a research library and curated collections used for scholarship and public education.

The structure was adapted from monastic accommodation into a private house and parish-related premises during the 16th century and remained associated with Luther and his family thereafter. In the 19th and 20th centuries it was converted into a museum and preserved as a heritage site.

Located in Lutherstadt Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt, the Lutherhaus sits close to the town’s market square and other Reformation sites, forming part of a concentrated museum district that attracts visitors interested in religious and European history.
