Lublin-Majdanek concentration camp
Museum Former Nazi concentration and extermination camp, now museum
Outside Lublin, Majdanek operates as a preserved concentration camp and memorial; visitors come for guided tours, original barracks and exhibitions documenting Nazi persecution and wartime history.
Lublin-Majdanek was a Nazi German concentration, forced labour and extermination complex located on the outskirts of Lublin, Poland, that operated during World War II. It is preserved today as a State Museum and memorial to the victims.
The camp was established by Nazi authorities in 1941 and functioned as a concentration and extermination site through 1944, during which time large numbers of prisoners were deported, exploited for forced labour or murdered. The site was liberated in July 1944 and was among the first former camps to be preserved and opened as a museum and memorial in the postwar period.
The memorial and museum lie on the eastern edge of the city of Lublin in eastern Poland, on the ground where the camp stood; it is accessible by road from Lublin city centre and serves as a regional site for education and commemoration.
- Museum status and conduct: The site operates as a state museum and memorial; visits require respectful behaviour and many tour resources explain the historical context and survivor testimony.
- Preservation and research: Original camp structures and extensive documentation remain on site, making it one of the best-preserved Nazi-era camps in Poland for educational visits and research.
What to See #
- Barracks and camp compound: Remains of prisoner barracks and pathways through the former camp compound form part of the preserved site and are interpretive elements of the museum.
- Crematoria and memorial areas: The remains of gas chambers and crematoria, together with memorial plaques and mass graves, are preserved as part of the memorial landscape.
- Museum and exhibitions: A museum and exhibition spaces present documents, photographs and artefacts that explain the camp's operation and the experiences of victims and prisoners.
