A central Slovak national park covering the Low Tatras mountains; visitors come for alpine peaks, marked hiking routes, cave systems and winter skiing opportunities.
Low Tatras National Park (Národný park Nízke Tatry) is a protected mountain area in central Slovakia covering the main ridge and flanks of the Low Tatras range. It contains alpine peaks, extensive karst features and mixed mountain forests and is a major national park.
The park’s principal attractions include high summits such as Ďumbier (2,043 m) and Chopok (2,024 m), developed ski areas on the northern slopes like Jasná, and significant cave systems such as the Demänovská caves. Trails across ridges and through valleys support hiking, climbing and winter sports.
The modern national park was designated to conserve the region’s biodiversity, forests and karst geomorphology; infrastructure for recreation and cave protection has been developed since the 20th century. Visitor management balances recreation with habitat protection.
The park lies in central-southern Slovakia within the Banská Bystrica administrative region, extending across mountainous terrain between the towns of Brezno, Banská Bystrica and Liptovský Mikuláš.

How to Get to Low Tatras National Park #
Low Tatras National Park covers a wide area in central Slovakia; common access points include the Jasná/Chopok area near Liptovský Mikuláš (popular for hiking and skiing) and the Donovaly area. Drive access is possible from regional centres such as Banská Bystrica and Poprad; there are regional bus services from those towns to the main resort villages and trailheads.
If you plan to visit specific peaks or valleys (for example Chopok in Jasná or trails from Donovaly) aim for the corresponding resort village as your base-the resorts have parking and local lift/bus connections into the park.
Tips for Visiting Low Tatras National Park #
- Access the Low Tatras via the Jasná/Chopok area for the most established trailheads and lift options - using the Chopok cable cars lets you reach the main ridge quickly and saves long uphill approaches.
- Start hikes early in the morning to avoid afternoon cloud and thunderstorms that commonly build over the range in summer and to enjoy quieter trails and summit viewpoints.
- If you want fewer people on the trails, use mid-week start times or choose lesser-known chalets and side-trails off the main Chopok ridge; and if you plan to visit Demänovská caves, reserve timed tickets in advance.
