- Use Killykeen Forest Park as your primary access point - the park has car parks, marked trails and boat/canoe launch facilities and is the usual base for exploring the islands and wetlands of Lough Oughter.
- See the lake by boat where possible: many of the most interesting features are the scattered islands and archaeological crannogs that are best appreciated from the water, and there are local boat hire and guided-trip options from the Killykeen area.
- Visit midweek or earlier in the morning to avoid weekend anglers and picnic crowds at the main car parks, and check with the Forest Park for any seasonal water-level or access advisories before setting out.
