Lorsch Abbey

Lorsch Abbey is a historic Carolingian monastery in Hesse, Germany, founded in the 8th century and noted for its surviving gatehouse and early medieval archaeology.

Established in the 700s, the abbey gained status as a religious and intellectual centre in the Carolingian era and accumulated a significant library and relics. Over subsequent centuries the monastic complex declined and parts were dismantled, but surviving structures and excavations preserve its early medieval history.

Situated in the town of Lorsch in Hesse, the abbey stands within a small archaeological park that is accessible from regional roads and is south of the Rhine-Main urban area.
