The Lorelei is a steep slate rock on the right bank of the Rhine near St. Goarshausen in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The cliff rises roughly 132 metres above the river and is known for its narrow, fast-flowing channel and strong currents.
A compact viewing plateau and nearby paths give panoramic views of the Rhine Gorge; many visitors combine a stop at the viewing point with river cruises that pass the rock. The site is also associated with local folklore and literary works and remains a focal point in the Rhine landscape.
The modern legend of the Lorelei was popularised in 19th-century poetry and song, notably by Heinrich Heine, which cemented its cultural profile. Over time the rock has been a navigational hazard known for turbulent water at the narrow stretch of the river.
The Lorelei sits approximately on the mid-Rhine, within the steep-sided Rhine Gorge that is recognised for its castles, vineyards and river traffic. It is close to the town of St. Goarshausen and the Rhine valley transport corridor.

How to Get to Lorelei #
The Lorelei viewpoint is near the village of St. Goarshausen; take regional trains to St. Goarshausen or nearby Sankt Goar and walk or take a short bus/taxi ride to the trailhead. River cruise boats between Bingen and Koblenz also pass the rock and offer a close-up view from the water.
