Lopud is an island in the Elaphiti archipelago off the Dalmatian coast of Croatia and administratively part of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The island is known for its pedestrianised settlements, sheltered bays and a notable sandy beach.
The main attractions are the sandy bay of Šunj and the small port village with historic monastery buildings and waterfront restaurants. The island’s compact layout concentrates services near the harbour and walking paths connect the beaches and settlements.
Lopud has been part of the maritime history of the Dubrovnik region and today combines small-scale tourism with local fishing and hospitality. Motor vehicles are generally absent, and visitors move around on foot or by bicycle.
Geographically it lies off the coast of Dubrovnik in the Adriatic and is visited by boats from Dubrovnik and neighbouring islands.

How to Get to Lopud #
Lopud is one of the Elaphiti Islands off Dubrovnik. Passenger ferries and seasonal fast catamarans sail from Dubrovnik’s Gruž harbour (and occasionally from the Old Town harbour) to Lopud; operators include Jadrolinija and seasonal/private services - check current timetables. From the Lopud quay the main village and beaches are a short walk; in Dubrovnik the Gruž port is a short taxi or local‑bus ride from the city centre.
Tips for Visiting Lopud #
- Use the early ferry from Dubrovnik and consider an overnight stay to avoid large day‑trip groups; arriving first thing also gives you the best chance to enjoy Sunj Beach before it fills.
- Explore beyond the main harbor-walk inland to find monastery ruins, olive groves and quieter coves that most day visitors miss.
- Plan transport back carefully: ferry schedules vary by season and many services are limited late in the day, so confirm departures when you arrive.
