Loop Head
Cape Clifftop headland in Ireland with prominent lighthouse
Peninsula in County Clare crowned by Loop Head Lighthouse, high coastal cliffs and ferry links; visitors walk cliff paths, watch seabird colonies and take boat trips for marine wildlife.
Loop Head is a limestone peninsula on the Atlantic coast of County Clare, forming the northern head of the Shannon Estuary entrance. It is known for its dramatic coastal cliffs and a working lighthouse at the promontory.
The headland is visited for cliff walks, seabird watching and the coastal panoramas from the lighthouse area. The point is a popular location for photographing sunsets over the Atlantic and for wildlife-spotting boat trips in the estuary.
The lighthouse dates from the 19th century and has long served as a navigation aid at the mouth of the Shannon. The peninsula’s cliffs and headland have a maritime history tied to fishing and shipping through the estuary.
