The river has been used for agriculture, mills and later industrial and urban development; infrastructure such as dams and canals modified its flow to support irrigation and reservoirs. Over time sections near Barcelona became heavily engineered to control floods and support economic growth.
Rising in the interior of Catalonia, the river runs generally southeast and reaches the sea at the Mediterranean coast near El Prat, just southwest of Barcelona.
