Llanquihue Lake

Llanquihue Lake is a large freshwater lake in Chile’s Los Lagos Region on the northern edge of Patagonia, notable for its broad shoreline and views of nearby stratovolcanoes. The lake forms an important recreational and scenic region with towns and resorts along its banks.

Key visitor experiences are the lakeside towns such as Puerto Varas and Frutillar, lakeside promenades and viewpoints that frame views of Volcán Osorno and other peaks. Boat trips, fishing and roadside lookouts are commonly used to appreciate the landscape.

The basin was shaped by glacial and volcanic processes and the lakeside settlements grew from 19th century German immigration and later development as tourist gateways. Infrastructure for visitors expanded through the 20th century to serve domestic and international tourism.

Llanquihue Lake sits east of the city of Puerto Montt and is surrounded by rolling lake plains and volcanic peaks; Puerto Varas is one of the closest and most frequently used towns for visitor access.
